Name that Story - Bible Lesson Review Game

Looking for a fun game for kidmin? Play "Name that Story" to review recent Bible stories.It takes only a few minutes to prepare. All you need is recent Sunday School take home papers or printed lesson materials.

Cut one picture from each of the previous lessons to be reviewed.
Cut out the title of each lesson.
Display the pictures where the kids can easily see them.
Give each child a title, and have them match the title to the corresponding pic.

Back to School Mini-Mission

Kids are headed back to school. It is a time of excitement and happy anticipation for many kids, but it is a not so happy time for others. Lots of students will go back to school without the needed supplies. Sure, there are lots of free backpack events that offer fully stocked backpacks, but not every child has the opportunity to attend one of those.

Challenge the kids in your church class (or your own children) to do a mini-mission.

Display a variety of school supplies on the table.
Ask the kids if they have noticed another student who is missing a particular needed supply.
Allow the kids to choose an item that fills the need.
Then, have them write a short, anonymous note to go with the chosen item.
Explain that the Bible teaches that we should help others in need, but we should not make a show of our work before others.
Encourage the kids to secretly place the item on the needy child's desk without being seen.

Leftover Letter Fun - Learning Games

As the kids head back to school, are you cleaning out those closets? Maybe you are in the process of moving. What to do with leftover letter tiles from a word game such as Scrabble (TM) or Upwords (TM)? I'll admit that I can't part with them. Ever. They have so much potential!

These ideas are suitable for:

beginning readers
school classrooms
children's groups at church
homeschoolers
family devotion time

The Materials

Letter tiles from word games

NOTE: The tiles don't have to match! Combine tiles from several games. Fun! Attention-getting!

Learning Games and Activities

ABC practice - Give the child the letters of the alphabet and ask her to arrange them in order.
Name fun - Give the child the letters of his name and have him arrange them to spell his name.
Sorting - Give each child 15-20 letter tiles (that represent certain letters - perhaps B, R, and L). Have them sort the letters into groups.
Counting - Ask the child to count how many letters are in each group.
Patterns - Give the child preselected letters to form patterns. (One example is using two letters for a repeating pattern. Many beginning spelling words end in AT - bat, cat, hat, mat, etc. So give the child a handful of letters A and T to practice the pattern: ATATATAT.)
Spelling _Give the child preselected letter tiles to practice a spelling list.
Vocab review - Give the child preselected letter tiles to spell vocab from a Reading or Bible story.

Back to Sunday School Time

It's Back-to-Sunday-School time! Yep. In my church, we call Sunday School - KidsLife. I think as long as I live I will refer to it both ways. (Not to compare it to a soft drink, but I still say soda-pop when I am with friends who have a strong preference one way or the other.)

I have been thinking about motivators for my class. I def want to use the Every Penny Counts idea to keep them interested in answering questions and to foster a habit of giving to missions.

I have also been thinking of how I can stay in touch with the kids between Sundays. Here is one idea I want to try:

Question Postcards

I went to my local Christian bookstore and purchased these (created by Tina Ledbetter - available from Universal Designs).

My plan is to jot a postcard (on Sunday afternoon) to each student in the class. The message will be short, but will include two things:

Great to see you / We missed you
A fill-in-the-blank or question based on the upcoming lesson

Kids who bring back the cards with the answer will get a small reward (candy, bookmark, other reward trinket).

My Confession

I have for a long, long time been drawn to writing notes and letters on Sunday afternoons. BUT family members can tell you - She (ME) can write great notes and letters, but ummm. . . doesn't do it as often as she should.

Noah's Ark Spelling Game

Recently, I saw an adorable pin for Math counting. Love, love, love this idea! Here is a similar activity to practice spelling and incorporate the story of Noah's Ark.

This idea is suitable for:

children's groups at church
homeschoolers
family devotion time

Materials

several paint sample strips (colors of the rainbow)
Bible story of Noah's Ark

Preparation

Prepare the strips by printing the name of a different animal on each one. Cut the strips into color sections.

How to Do the Activity

Read the story of Noah's Ark.Have kids arrange the color-sections to spell the names of animals.

Every Penny Counts

This idea is suitable for:

children's groups at church
homeschoolers
family devotion time

Materials

an empty plastic jar (One with a wide mouth works best.)
small amount of duct tape
pennies
another container or bag to hold the pennies until they are used
Sunday School lesson, devotion material, focus Bible story

Preparation

Prepare the jar by washing and drying it.
Add a single strip of duct tape around the middle of the jar.
Gather pennies
Choose the Bible materials (stories, lessons, devotions)

How to Do the Activity

Read the story of the widow's gift in Luke 21:1-4.
Explain that even small amounts of giving add up. (In this case, the widow's giving was not small to her.)
Explain that the Every Penny Counts activity will be ongoing. After reading a Bible story, lesson, or devotional reading, you will ask questions. Every correct answer will earn a penny in the jar.
Together choose where the funds will go (missions, local food pantry, purchase of items for Operation Christmas Child box).
When the jar is full, have students guess the amount of money collected.
Count the money and then contribute it to the agreed-upon area of giving. As a group, pray for the recipients of the money.
Reward children with a free time party.
Repeat with the jar and new pennies.

Other Options

Add in Math! Have the kids add on the amount of money earned at each sitting for a running total.
Have multiple jars of graduating sizes, each with a different color tape. Explain that after completing one level (perhaps green), they will be moving on to the next level (of a different color).

Backpack Missions for Young Learners

Several months ago, I blogged about a Backpack Mission Project. The focus was on involving tweens in such a community outreach through giving and prayer.

Okay. I will admit it. Yesterday I braved the swarms of people at Walmart, many of whom were purchasing back-to-school supplies. It made me think of the backpack missions and how younger kiddos could be involved. Sure, all the things in the first post would apply to young kids, but here are a few more that really speak to three to eight year olds developmentally.

Talk about the importance and kind of learning that each supply item represents. (Crayons, for example, will help kids draw or doodle the many things that God has made. . . and art is FUN!)
Help children as they pack the backpacks for others. Getting one of each item in each bag reinforces sharing and the important Math skill of one-to-one correspondence.
Pray with the children to thank God for the many blessings God has given each of them.
