On the Way to Grandma's House

Lots of people travel for Thanksgiving. In fact, the day before is said to be the busiest travel day of the year.

Drawing for the Doodle Race is one way to help kids pass the time. There are other benefits as well:
Here is how to get started:

Navigating the Bible - An Important Skill for Tweens

Beginning readers enjoy reading Bible storybooks, collections of Bible stories that have been rewritten with simpler words. However, when kids enter third or fourth grade, they are ready to move to a traditional Bible. Tweens (kids ages 9-12) are at a perfect age to learn to navigate the Bible. Here are some reasons to encourage the tween reader in finding his or her was around the Bible and to apply it.

Tweens have mastered basic reading skills.
  • Most tweens can read "sight words". Those are the words that appear frequently in English.
  • They have learned reading strategies to help understand other words that may be unfamiliar. Some of these strategies are decoding (using word parts or sounds to read a word) and using context clues (understanding the meaning of the new word based on the rest of the sentence).
Tweens have the ability to understand the format of the Bible.
  • They can read and use a Table of Contents.
  • They have the ability to learn Bible references (book, chapter, and verse).
Tweens are developing the maturity to understand and apply the Bible.
  • They can make inferences (understanding what a passage means but does not directly state).
  • They can make generalizations (application of the message to an area of their own lives).

What did I leave off the list? What other reasons are tweens the perfect age to learn to navigate the Bible?

Tween Ministry - Count YUR Blessings

Are you looking for a Thanksgiving game for children's ministry? Here is a game that engages tweens and challenges them to count their blessings.

Supplies

  • poster board with grid lines
  • fine tip colored markers

Cost

I got three sheets in a package from Wally World for two dollars. You will want the kind with grid lines so that the kids can complete the activity without overlapping words.

Preparation

No prep is required except gathering the supplies. Love.

Do It

  • Introduce the activity by talking about God's provision and our response of thankfulness. Have the kids look up the verses below to make the connection between the activity and God's Word.
  • Give each tween a different colored marker.
  • Explain that they will be printing things and people they are thankful for. Each box on the grid should have no more than one letter, and connecting letters should form a word. Think how a crossword puzzle is organized.
  • After the tweens have added all the words they can, count the number of letters for each participant. This is where the different colors come into play. (Count your blessings!) The student with the most letters in his or her color is the winner, but we are all winners with God!

Play Another Way

Divide the kids into small groups. Give each group a sheet of poster board. The group/board with the largest tally number is the winner.

I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.  Psalm 9:1 (NIV)

I thank my God every time I remember you.  Philippians 1:3  (NIV)

Beginning Reader Thanksgiving Project

Are you looking for a project that teaches young readers to express thankfulness to God? Here is an idea that requires ZERO dollars and very little prep time.

Supplies

  • large brown paper grocery bags (one for each child)
  • a pie plate (for tracing a pie circle)
  • crayons or markers
  • scissors
  • ruler
  • magazines (optional)
  • glue sticks (for magazine option)

Preparation

  • Trace one circle ("pie") for each child.
  • Cut the pie shape - or allow the kids to do this. (NOTE: This may be difficult for some young children.)
  • Draw up to four sections on each pie. For very young children, you may wish to leave the pie whole.
  • Print the Bible verse in one section of the pie.
  • Create an example pie with drawings (or words) of things the kids may be thankful for.

The Activity

  • Talk about things the children are thankful for (family, homes, food, clothes, pets, friends, good health, toys, etc.).
  • Show the children the pie shapes as well as the example with pictures.
  • Encourage them to drawn (or write) one thing that they are thankful for in each section.
  • Have them add zigzag lines around the edge to represent the pie crust.

Options

  • Use magazine pictures instead of drawings.
  • Take a picture of each child with his family prior to the activity. Have a print out of the family picture for the child to add to his pie.

Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name.  1 Chronicles 29:13  (NIV)

How have you taught beginning readers to be thankful for their blessings? Send me your ideas or pictures of the projects, and I will display them. Because of confidentiality, I will cannot post pictures of children.

Encourage Young Bible Readers

Children who are just learning to read are eager to practice their skills. They are looking for an audience! While kids can read to anyone or anything (think fave stuffed animal or family pet), they LOVE to read to their parents, grandparents, and caregivers.

What better reading material for a new reader is there than a Bible for beginning readers? Listening to a child read Bible stories has many benefits. Here are three biggies.

  • Children learn from reading the same story again and again. It boosts confidence and increases fluency (the smoothness of their reading).
  • They learn from exposure to the same story. (If she reads/hears material repeatedly, she is more likely to remember the message.)
  • Children learn to come back to God's Word in times of joy and times of sorrow. By listening to a young reader, you are telling her that she is important AND that she is reading a Book of great, great value.

Guess what? It is not only the beginning readers who are looking for an audience. The tween crowd (ages 9-12) enjoy the challenge of finding a particular Scripture passage and soak up that attention from Mom or Dad, too.

Blessings on your reading time with the young Bible readers in your care!

THNX TXT

Thinking of reasons to be thankful? Many people are posting their thoughts for each day of November. Why not carry that over to your student ministry group? Except, challenge them to text their thanks. Seriously? Have them use their cell phones during our group time? Seriously.

  • Have them use their phones to text someone, telling that person why they are thankful for them.
  • If the recipient does not text (perhaps grandparents), have a time for them to call that person.
I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers. Philemon 1:4  (NIV)
