Back to School Mini-Mission

Kids are headed back to school. It is a time of excitement and happy anticipation for many kids, but it is a not so happy time for others. Lots of students will go back to school without the needed supplies. Sure, there are lots of free backpack events that offer fully stocked backpacks, but not every child has the opportunity to attend one of those.

Challenge the kids in your church class (or your own children) to do a mini-mission.

  1. Display a variety of school supplies on the table.
  2. Ask the kids if they have noticed another student who is missing a particular needed supply.
  3. Allow the kids to choose an item that fills the need.
  4. Then, have them write a short, anonymous note to go with the chosen item.
  5. Explain that the Bible teaches that we should help others in need, but we should not make a show of our work before others.
  6. Encourage the kids to secretly place the item on the needy child's desk without being seen.

  • I am having a Doodle Race on my blog (here).
  • Kids (and adults) can submit a doodle (simple drawing) for the race.
  • Zonderkidz is offering prizes to two winners (a free book and publication in my devos). . . Thanks, Zonderkidz! ! !

I'd be honored if you share the race with your fam and friends. Post it on your facebook, website, or blog. It is going to be fun!

Here is a link you can share:

Family Bible Hunt

I love a good sale. . . You know the garage sales that dot our neighborhoods with treasures. I particularly love the boxes of books.

Often I find Bibles in those boxes. Maybe they are children's Bibles whose readers have gone on to other versions. Maybe they are teen Bibles that have been replaced with ones with more adult-looking covers.

Maybe your family has some of those at home. I'm not talking about the ones that are you are using now or the family heirlooms, but the other Bibles that could be passed on to someone else to read and enjoy and treasure.

Today is a great day for a Family Bible Hunt. Look for the extra copies of God's Word that you might share (as put it in their hands).

If you are looking for a place to do that, you will want to check out Love Packages. Click on their link to take "The Nickel Tour". They send used (and new) Bibles and Sunday School materials all over the world. It's okay if you don't live close to them. They take mail. (See the video.) And mail for print items is pretty reasonable.

Happy hunting!

Christmas in July Mission Project

Have you noticed the stores? Yep. It is only July, but the displays are full of two things: back-to-school supplies and Christmas. Isn't that wonderful? Seriously. I mean it.Back-to-school time is perfect for packing those boxes for Operation Christmas Child.

The school supply sales have great prices. It is easy to stock up on everything a child needs for school. . . wherever he or she lives:

  • crayons
  • pencils
  • colored pencils
  • erasers
  • markers
  • rulers
  • scissors
  • glue
  • paper
  • notebooks

You don't have to fill the box only with school supplies, but you can add the fun things, toiletries, and clothing items later.

Earlier I blogged about a backpack mission project. Are these things in the Bible? I think so. . .

. . . the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’   Acts 20:35b   (NIV)

A Backpack Mission Project

School is out for summer. . . In fact, it is barely out. So why talk about a backpack mission project? It is an engaging mission project that tweens can do at home with their families. When it is complete, it will be time for school to begin again, and one child will be blessed by the project.

  1. Begin with a new backpack, a list of school supplies, and a small, fun spiral notebook.
  2. Explain to the tweens that each will have a week to take the backpack home. His or her family may choose one item from the list to add to the backpack. Check out my Pinterest board with faith-filled notes that could be attached to each item.
  3. Also, ask each tween (as it is his or her turn with the backpack) to add a note of encouragement, message of faith, favorite Bible verse, or promise of prayer. The fun notebooks could be used for that purpose.
  4. Before passing the backpack on to the contact person for giveaway, pray as a group for the student who will receive it.

Does the Bible talk about a backpack mission project? I think so. . .
