Matching Game for Beginning Bible Readers

This idea is great for kids who are beginning readers. Use it to reinforce Bible story understanding while boosting reading skills.

Materials

  • A beginning reader Bible story verse (from a children's Bible or Sunday School material)
  • Colorful index cards
  • A marker to print easy-to-see words

Preparation

  • Print each word from the verse two times (once on each of the colors).

Play the Game

  • Arrange one set of cards on the table in order.
  • Have the kids take turns arranging the second set of cards to match the first set.
  • Then, have them read the verse to you.

Other Options

  • Keep the card sets for future review. Have them available at a "station" for kids to practice the verse during later meeting times.
  • Give the sets of cards (in a scrambled order) to two different kids. Have a race to see who can arrange their cards first.

Zonderkidz is publishing two tween devos (for girls: Just Sayin' - 90 ways to rock your faith and for boys: Dare U 2 Open This Book - 90 ways to rock your faith). I have the awesome responsibility of writing the devos. So I am having a little race to promote the books.

What is a doodle?

Think simple drawing - not fancy : )

Who can enter? Ages 9 - 100

The race will have TWO winners. Yep. You could be one of the winners. BUT you have to enter a doodle to be in the race. Just sayin'. . .

Here are the links:

Leftover Letter Fun - Learning Games

As the kids head back to school, are you cleaning out those closets? Maybe you are in the process of moving. What to do with leftover letter tiles from a word game such as Scrabble (TM) or Upwords (TM)?  I'll admit that I can't part with them. Ever. They have so much potential!

These ideas are suitable for:
  • beginning readers
  • school classrooms
  • children's groups at church
  • homeschoolers
  • family devotion time

The Materials

  • Letter tiles from word games
NOTE: The tiles don't have to match! Combine tiles from several games. Fun! Attention-getting!

Learning Games and Activities

  • ABC practice - Give the child the letters of the alphabet and ask her to arrange them in order.
  • Name fun - Give the child the letters of his name and have him arrange them to spell his name.
  • Sorting - Give each child 15-20 letter tiles (that represent certain letters - perhaps B, R, and L). Have them sort the letters into groups.
  • Counting - Ask the child to count how many letters are in each group.
  • Patterns - Give the child preselected letters to form patterns. (One example is using two letters for a repeating pattern. Many beginning spelling words end in AT - bat, cat, hat, mat, etc. So give the child a handful of letters A and T to practice the pattern: ATATATAT.)
  • Spelling _Give the child preselected letter tiles to practice a spelling list.
  • Vocab review - Give the child preselected letter tiles to spell vocab from a Reading or Bible story.

Jesus Loves Me Word Game

If you follow my blog regularly, you will notice that I have ANOTHER paper plate activity. Truth: At the store that sells all things for one dollar, you can purchase three packages of colorful plates for ENDLESS games and activities. I LOVE the possibilities for families, church groups, scouts, etc. Here is one that is perfect for beginning readers.

Jesus Loves Me Word Game

Materials

  • dessert-sized paper plates (3 colors)

Preparation

  • Using one color for each word, print the words JESUS LOVES _________ (name of the child).

Ways to Play

  • Scramble the letters and ask the child to arrange them into love message.
  • Hide the letters for the child to find before he or she arranges them.
  • Use with a group. Have each child hold one letter to spell JESUS LOVES ME. Take a photo for children to take home.
