Three Questions to Ask about VBS

Vacation Bible School season is in full swing. Each day is sure to be packed with fun and learning. If your child is attending VBS this summer, here are three questions to ask when he gets home.

• Who was the story about today?

• What did that person do?

• Why is that important to us today?

For example, the Day 1 lesson from Agency D3 (Lifeway) focuses on this question: Was Jesus just a good man? So, a child studying that VBS curriculum would be able to answer three questions as follows.

Who was the story about today?

The lesson is about Jesus and John the Baptist.

 

What did that person do?

Jesus asked John to baptize him. When he did, a voice from heaven announced that Jesus is indeed God's Son.

 

Why is that important to us today?

If Jesus is God's Son, we should study the Bible to learn more about His life and teachings.


Asking three simple questions can help your child review the day's lesson. It can also give you a starting point for further discussion and life application.

Three Rules for Behavior Management at VBS

Vacation Bible School is huge. Obviously, it is huge because of its importance in teaching kids about God and His plan for their lives.

VBS is huge in other ways as well. It is a time when a very large number of children and adults gather. Huge! Sheer numbers can create a time of confusion or even chaos, but it does not have to be. Exercising three rules can make Vacation Bible School a breeze.

• Prepare

  This one really applies to the adults, but the end result helps everyone. Preparing materials and planning which adult will be responsible for different tasks ahead of time as possible will keep the lessons and activities flowing. Kids will stay engaged in learning and fun.

• Explain Expectations

  Everyone does better knowing their expectations. If a child knows what is expected (such as listening during prayer or as another child/adult speaks) it is much for likely to happen. No expectations explained? The results are left up as many interpretations as there are children and adults.

• Follow a Routine

  People (young and old) thrive on routine. Many Bible Schools have a schedule (routine) that assists teachers in moving on to the next activity. If your VBS has classes that function independently (all activities in one room) consider creating a schedule so that things get done and kids know what to expect next.

Got VBS?

Calling all tweens!

New tween devos are coming. They are all about your life and what the Bible says about you! Each devotion is personal. Each one will help you grow in your faith in God. Be ready! Get stoked because Jesus cares for you! New tween devos. . .coming from Zonderkidz in 2015. 

How many days until summer vacation? Are you counting down? Ask anyone in the 9-12 year old group. They can tell you. You might be surprised, though. Some will also say this.

I don't really want school to be out.

Maybe they will miss their friends. Maybe they will miss having something to do. Maybe they will miss the structure of an organized school day. Enter VBS. Vacation Bible School. Bible School. It is that time of year, and teachers are busy getting ready.

At VBS training recently, there was a resounding call to pray for our students. There was the assurance that classlists would be available as soon as possible.

It was a busy afternoon. Can you say HIGH E_N_E_R_G_Y on the part of every director? They were ready for us -- ready to lead us in getting ready for teaching and sharing with lots and lots of children. We learned the fun VBS song with hand motions. We saw wonderful VBS decoration ideas. We learned about telling children about Jesus. Then, I walked to our department director's vehicle to get our supplies -- bags filled with lesson materials, decorations, and game items. She had it all ready. Someone asked about student handouts. Check. Copied and in the bags. Someone asked about another needed item. Check again. In the bags.

You know, our classlists will come as soon as the families sign up. I have no doubt. We will have names of VBS goers to pray for, but guess what. . . God already has that list. He already knows the children He is calling for each class. The prayer list is ready for us today.

How can we pray for the children on our classlists?

• for the schedules of the families to allow children to come
• for transportation, especially for children of working parents
• for the preparation of the children's hearts
• for engaging, making-memories experiences
• for safety and health
• for engaging, run-til-your tired recreation
• for last for a lifetime, heart-filling songs and music
• for display-at-home arts and crafts
• for inspiring lessons of missions

Let's pray for for the awesome opportunity to tell them about Jesus!
