Find Appropriate Material
It is important to find books that present a Christian perspective. Sometimes these beliefs are represented openly. Other books are just good, clean books. Christian bookstores, online shopping, and church or public libraries are a few sources for reading material. Garage sales and swaps with friends are also ways to get good books.
The content of the material should be appropriate, but so should the reading level. Determining a comfortable reading level does not have to be a long, drawn out process. Ask your child's teacher for information about your child's recreational reading level. Then, enlist the librarian to help you locate comfy-level books.
Read Together
Kids love and need time with their parents. Choose a read-together book. It should be a book that is at or a little above your child's recreation reading level. Then, read the book together (taking turns on reading the pages).
Another spin on reading together is to spend time enjoying a book that you read to your child. It should be an appropriate interest level, but it could be too hard for your child to read independently.
Read with Peers
Summer reading clubs are perfect for kids to read together. Clubs could be found at your local library or online through various businesses and book publishers.
Speaking of summer reading clubs - I adore them! Are you promoting an online book club? Send me your information, so I can add it to my 2014 list.
